Your Guide to Byron Bay Beaches: The Best Spots to Swim, Surf & Soak Up the Sun
There’s something magical about Byron Bay, and if you ask me, its beaches are the heart and soul of this laid-back surf town. After living in three countries and travelling to over 30, I’ve learned that not all beach towns are created equal… but Byron Bay beaches? They just hit differently. And honestly? They’re some of the best in the world.
Your Guide to Byron Bay Beaches
Whether you're chasing waves, watching dolphins from a headland, or just looking to laze on a towel with a smoothie in hand, this guide will take you through the must-visit Byron Bay beach spots for every kind of traveller.
Byron Bay, Main Beach
Byron Bay Main Beach
Best for First Timers & Classic Beach Vibes
If it’s your first time in town, Byron Bay Main Beach is your obvious starting point. Located right at the end of Jonson Street (aka the heart of Byron), this is the beach where locals and tourists collide in the best way.
Why I love it:
Lifeguard-patrolled, so it’s perfect for families and safe swimming.
You can literally roll from your brunch at Bayleaf or dip out of the boutiques on Lawson Street and land on the sand within minutes.
Sunset here is an event. The locals and backpackers alike grab a bite to eat and watch the sky turn pastel behind the lighthouse.
Tip: For the best photo, walk north towards Belongil to get the Main Beach curve with the Cape Byron Lighthouse peeking in the background.
Wategos Beach, Byron Bay
Wategos Beach
Best for Calm Water & Dolphin Spotting
Nestled just below the lighthouse, Wategos Beach feels like stepping into a secret cove. With turquoise water and gentle waves, it’s perfect for floating, paddleboarding, and watching dolphins glide by like locals.
Why it’s a fave:
It’s more sheltered than Main Beach, so the swell is usually softer.
The short coastal walk from The Pass to Wategos is stunning and worth doing barefoot.
There’s a free BBQ area, so pack supplies and turn it into a long beachy afternoon.
Tip: Keep your eyes on the water - dolphins and even the odd whale (usually during the winter) come surprisingly close to shore.
The Pass, Byron Bay
The Pass
Best for Surfing & Sunrise
This one’s for the early risers and the surf-obsessed. The Pass is iconic for a reason. Expect long right-hand breaks and salty sunrises.
Why it’s a must-visit:
It’s one of the most consistent surf spots in Byron.
There’s a lookout platform right above the beach that’s perfect for sunrise.
You might catch longboarders dancing on their boards as the light hits the waves. Pure Byron.
Tip: Arrive just after dawn for golden light and fewer crowds. Bring a coffee from Top Shop or Bay Grocer to complete the experience.
Tallows Beach, Byron Bay
Tallows Beach
Best for Solitude & Nature Lovers
If Byron Bay Main Beach is for mingling, Tallows Beach is for disconnecting. Located on the southern side of Cape Byron, this wild stretch of coast is raw, powerful, and often near empty.
Why I escape here:
It’s great for a windswept walk, meditation, or journaling.
The energy is different here, a little more untamed and spiritual.
It’s technically in Arakwal National Park, so expect stunning nature and the occasional wallaby sighting.
Tip: Come here if you’re feeling overwhelmed. There’s something incredibly grounding about this beach. Just you, the waves, and the wide open sky.
Belongil Beach, Byron Bay
Belongil Beach
Best for a Quiet Swim & Chill Vibes
Just north of Byron Bay Main Beach, Belongil is a bit of a hidden gem. Think: dog walkers, calm water, and a peaceful atmosphere away from the buzz.
Why I recommend it:
It’s a short walk from town but feels a world away.
There’s an old shipwreck you can see at low tide!
Perfect for a low-key beach day with a book and an iced latte.
Tip: Stay nearby at one of the boho Airbnb cottages in Belongil and you’ll feel like a local instantly.
